Steps in Detail with Tips:

  1. The easiest part is to keep the car rims on the wheel and take a hammer and gently pop the logo out from the center of your wheel.
  2. Then you have to clean the rim thoroughly. You can mix water along with some soap and it should be enough to take out as much dirt possible as you can. Rub the rim with a simple cotton cloth and clean it. This will ensure that the rim is safe to work on in the next step.
  3. In order to start the sanding procedure, it is very advantageous to use a gritting tool, and having one can help ease the process of sanding. A 200 grit sandpaper flat disc can be used for the procedure to get the job done. You will need to have a good quality wet and dry sanding paper to get a premium finish once you are done applying the sanding paper.
  4. Make sure to wear your safety glasses, a mask, and some hand gloves for the process so that you may not breathe in the metal dust.
  5. Now start sanding the scratched area using a rotary tool and move the rotary tool forward and backward around the area of the scratch. You do not want to go too deep in the area of scratch so try doing this evenly on the damaged area.
  6. Sand pass the scratches evenly you do not want an uneven wavy finish but a uniform finish. Do this for all the scratches that are visible on the wheel.
  7. The trick is to concentrate on areas where there is no scratch so that the entire scratched area is dealt with properly. After-some-time you will see the curb go away and scratches becoming completely invisible depending upon the depth of the curb and the time required for it to completely disappear.
  8. Once you are done there will be no deep grooves left. Now take a hose and wash the entire car rims properly. Make sure to dry the aluminum rims completely to make sure that there is no water before applying the stripper.
  9. For the next part, we will use a premium sprayable stripper. The stripper actually helps to bubble up the clear coat before applying the bigger grit sandpapers on the car rims. You do not want to get the stripper on your hands as it has chemicals in it so make sure to put on some gloves.
  10. Pour the stripper into the spray bottle and rub it onto the clear coat with a sponge or a brush. You will eventually have to use a lot of strippers so do not be shy to apply the stripper properly using the sponge. Make sure not to apply the stripper on the wheel. If by mistake you apply the stripper on the wheels.
  11. Make sure to clean it off immediately. Let the stripper dry for an hour so that the clear coat may come off properly.
  12. Now we will need to neutralize the chemical stripper using an after-wash neutralizer. You can use a piece of cloth to apply the neutralizer onto the rim. As we apply the neutralizer the clear coat peels off without a problem.
  13. If your clear coat is not coming off easily then you can use an abrasive sponge to take it off. If your clear coat does not peel off completely you need to repeat the steps from step 9 by applying the stripper again and let it dry and take the peel off with the abrasive sponge. This step is the hardest part and you may have to repeat it if it goes wrong the first time.
  14. Now apply soapy water on the sandpaper and on the car rims before start scrubbing the car rims. This will ensure smooth and even scrubbing.
  15. Use 400 grit sandpaper and look for deeper scratches if any and remove the imperfections right at this stage. You do not want any deeper scratches to remain after this stage.
  16. Wash the car rims again and start using the 600-grit sandpaper as this will smooth out things further but will not remove any deeper scratches.
  17. Now wash the car rims again and move to the 1000 grit sandpaper. By this time, the scratches should disappear, and the surface appears shiny.
  18. After rinsing the car rims, we move on to the final 2000 grit sandpaper. By this time, you will be seeing a smooth surface on which the sandpaper slides easily and the surface should appear shiny. Rinse the wheel properly again.
  19. After grinding the car rims look for any scratches so that the rim can be polished. But before making the car rims absolutely dry.
  20. Use a cone sponge and put it on the gritting tool and start applying the polish by putting it on the cone. If you plan to do this step by hand it will require a lot of time so make sure to use the cone sponge and rotator for an even polish.
  21. Once you have polished the car rims, use a microfibre cloth to buff the car rims by hand. This will not require any time and your wheel will be looking brand new by this step.
  22. After this step, you can put some clear coat on the car rims again so that you do not have to polish the car rims after some time.
  23. Use rubbing alcohol, start cleaning the car rims by using a micro fire cloth.
  24. Make sure you are not missing an area and you cover the entire rim. Give it 15 minutes to rest and use tape to wrap the valve stem and cover the wheels rubber with paper.
  25. Use a clear UV-resistant non-yellowing gloss and put down three even coats. As you spray move the spray evenly spraying across the complete rim. This ensures an even coating. Take the papers out and let the car rims dry.
  26. Remove the valve stem tape and put back the logo in the center and your tire is good to go.
