Staggered Wheels vs Square Setup

A lot of times when you are searching for factory car wheels, one has to ask the question of whether one needs square setup wheels or staggered wheel setup. The article will tell you all the information regarding square setup wheels and a staggered wheel setup. We shall also discuss the pros and cons of both the wheel setups and conclude which one fits your needs.

What is a Staggered Wheel Setup?

A staggered wheel setup means that the front wheels are smaller than the rear wheels. The means that the size of the front wheels of the car would be smaller in terms of wheel diameter and wheel width than the rear wheels.

What is a Square Wheel Setup?

A square wheel setup means that every wheel and tire is going to be of the same size on all four wheels attached to the car. This means that the rear wheels will be the same size as the front wheels, and the lefts will be the same as the right wheels.

Is the staggered wheel setup better than square setup wheels?

The staggered wheel setup is used in more horse-power performance cars. They are also used in the vehicles that are used in drag racing. The common vehicles are the Chevy’s, Mustang’s, Dodge’s, Mercedes AMG, Porsche’s, and BMW’s.

Pros of Staggered Wheel Setup:

The advantage of staggered wheels comes from the fact that rotating the car wheels provides the opportunity to maximize the width of the tire on the front and on the rear when rotated. Another advantage of staggered wheels is to maximize the handling requirements when on track to get the maximum performance. Staggered wheel setup provides more stability to the wheels and improves handling.

Cons of Staggered Wheel Setup:

A staggered wheel setup is not going to be rotational meaning that you cannot rotate the smaller front wheels with the larger back wheels. But they can only be rotated from the left side to the right side. This rotation if done is going to cause a lot of rubbing and is going to make things difficult in terms of fitment like one needs to look into proper offset. Another disadvantage of staggered wheel setup is that if the rear wheels are extended wider than required this can causes wearing of tire treads and rubbing of the car wheels with the wheel wells and fenders.

Pros of Square Setup Wheels:

In square setup wheels, all four wheels are interchangeable. There is an exception to this point if your wheels are directional meaning they can rotate in only one particular direction. In this case, the car wheels can be moved from the front side to the backside of the car but they can not be rotated sideways from left to right or vice versa. Square setup wheels produce more front wheel grip and hold the car more strongly to the track. The car feels more rooted from the front.

Cons of Square Setup Wheels:

The cons of square wheels setup are that it would have lesser drag than the staggered wheel setup and lesser handling performance when on track against a staggered wheels setup. The weight of the cars the majority of the time is shifted more towards the back axle of the wheels than the front end. This causes more load to appear on the rear wheels as compared to the front wheels.

 Conclusion:

The decision rests on the way a vehicle is to be used. If it is to cover lesser miles and requires more performance then staggered wheel setup is surely the way to go. Whereas if the vehicle requires less performance and has more miles to cover then a square wheel setup can help achieve the required objective.
